Our History

“In search of land of their own, four men set out from Marshall County, Kansas, to settle and tame this unexplored prairie in 1872. After walking a distance of one hundred and fifty miles, Michael Mueller, Leonhard Merklein, Michael Merklein, and George Veeh arrived tired and hungry at Kirwin, Kansas.”

“Once they had explored the region, they returned to the land office in Kirwin to file claims for ground along Deer Creek in western Phillips County. They returned to their homesteads and built dugouts in the bank along the creek.” “1877 saw the coming of more settlers. These included J. Bach, F. Krafft, Geo. Krafft, Geo. Weinman, M. Preuss, F. Veeh, J. Merklein, J. Vogel H. Schneck, L. Stepper, M. Weinman, and Geo. Merklein. Many of these settlers were related to each other, and most of them traced their roots to Waldmannshofen in the kingdom of Wuerttemberg, Germany.”   Read More >>
